Our Story

Built for people who don’t like normal gyms.

Not because we’re exclusive. Because we’re the opposite of everything that makes gyms feel unwelcoming — the judgment, the noise, the cookie-cutter programs, the trainers who don’t know your name. We built something different deliberately. Serious coaching. A genuinely warm environment. And results that hold up outside the gym.

How It Started

Most people who find us have tried other gyms. They’ve had stretches where training stuck, and longer stretches where it didn’t. They’re busy — running businesses, managing teams, raising families — and the thing that keeps falling off the list is the one thing they know matters.

The problem is rarely motivation. It’s finding somewhere they trust — the right coaches, the right environment, and a program that’s actually built for them. Not a template. Not a six-week challenge. Something that fits their life and gets better over time.

That’s what State of Fitness was built to be. We treat people like people. No egos, no gym clichés, no cookie-cutter programs. Just serious coaching in an environment where you’re known by name, your program is yours, and the people around you are in a similar stage of life.

It started in 2020 — a dissolved business partnership, equity pulled from a townhouse, a first child on the way, and then Melbourne locked down. For eight months, sessions ran in empty parks and over Zoom. The clients who kept showing up when they had every reason not to shaped this place more than any business plan did.

We opened a 6×6 metre space in South Yarra. It was small. It was enough. Growth came through referrals, not advertising. It stayed small on purpose. It still is.

The Team

Six coaches. All university-qualified.

Hired as much for who they are as what they know.

The team covers strength, rehabilitation, and performance between them — which means whatever you need, someone here has done it. We also train the next generation of coaches, hosting Deakin University sports science placement students for 40 weeks of the year. Two of our current coaches came through that program and never left.

Dedicated admin staff handle the running of the studio, so our coaches can focus on the only thing that matters — working with clients and building the programs that get them where they want to go.
